Johnson suggested Tuesday that coronavirus infections were higher in Britain than in Italy or Germany because it was a “freedom-loving country” — a barb that sparked great offence in Rome.

Asked in parliament if “the reason Germany and Italy have far lower Covid rates than us” is because their contact tracing systems work better, he said there was “a very important difference… our country is a freedom-loving country”.

He claimed that made it very difficult to ask the British population uniformly to obey guidelines.

Asked about the comment, Mattarella said: “We Italians also love freedom, but we also care about seriousness”.

Italy was the first country outside China to face a major coronavirus outbreak, but has managed to keep infection rates relatively low compared to Spain, France and Britain.

  1. I am proud to be living inItaly, a country where an individualistic people know how to obey the rules when necessary!

  2. Has nothing to do with the UK being freedom loving and it is insulting to other nations who have done well, to use this as an excuse for his less than stellar leadership. Boris has constantly twiddled his thumbs and waxed and waned with what direction he wanted to go with regards to COVID-19. While Italy had put many restrictions in place, (along with many other nations), the UK left its border open way too long. For the UK the emphasis seem to be on economy, whereas the emphasis in Italy has been the lives of its citizens.

Italian tourism minister charged with Covid-era fraud

Prosecutors on Friday charged Italy's tourism minister with fraud relating to government redundancy funds claimed by her publishing companies during the coronavirus pandemic.

Opposition lawmakers immediately requested the resignation of Daniela Santanche, a leading member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s far-right Brothers of Italy party.

Santanche, 63, has strongly rejected the allegations, including in a defiant appearance in parliament last year.

“The Milan prosecutor’s office today requested the indictment of the Minister Santanche and other persons as well as the companies Visibilia Editore and Visibilia Concessionaria,” the office said in a brief statement.

They were indicted “for alleged fraud of the INPS (National Institute for Social Security) in relation to alleged irregularities in the use of the Covid 19 redundancy fund, for a total of 13 employees”.

According to media reports, Visibilia is accused of obtaining state funds intended to help companies struggling with the pandemic to temporarily lay off staff — when in fact the 13 employees continued to work.

Santanche sold her stake in Visibilia when she joined the government of Meloni, who took office in October 2022.

The investigation has been going on for months, but with the decision by prosecutors to indict, opposition parties said Santanche should resign.

“We expect the prime minister to have a minimum of respect for the institutions and ask for Daniela Santanche’s resignation,” said Elly Schlein, leader of the centre-left Democratic Party.
