”There are unanimous reports saying that the man pointed the gun at himself,” police information officer Marie Persson of the Malmö police told news agency TT.
The incident, which was initially believed to be an accident, occurred in the early afternoon at a Malmö shooting range.
Police and medics were quick on the scene after receiving a call shortly after midday but could establish that the man was already dead upon their arrival.
“He reportedly died quite quickly,” Calle Persson of the local police told daily Expressen on Sunday.
Although no one else was injured during the incident, police were made aware that there were a handful of witnesses to the tragic event.
The witnesses were quickly offered help from the crisis unit, trained to handle people’s reactions after accidents and other crises.
Police also spent Sunday afternoon questioning the witnesses of the incident to find out the chain of events.
After hearing their accounts of the incident, police are now content that there was no crime involved but that the man turned the gun on himself.
