In the recently published Academic Ranking of World Universities, conducted by Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, Karolinska Institutet came top of the class for Sweden in 50th place.
Karolinska is one of Europe’s largest medical universities and celebrates its 200th jubilee this year.
Founded in 1477, the country’s oldest educational institution, Uppsala University, came in 76th place while Stockholm University was ranked 88th.
US universities dominated the top 20 with Ivy League stalwarts Harvard and Stanford taking the top two places respectively.
The best placed Nordic seat of learning was awarded to Copenhagen University which took 43rd place.
The annual list was first published in 2003 and is highly reputed within academic circles around the world.
The rankings are based on criteria including research performance, number of Nobel Prizes won by alumni and staff and other accolades including articles published in scientific journals.
