The city is expecting around 60,000 participants and around a million spectators.
More than 200 groups are taking part in the demonstration on foot and on floats. This year’s demonstration is held under the motto “For human rights. Many. Together. Strong” (“Für Menschenrechte. Viele. Gemeinsam. Stark”.)
The Cologne CSD parade, which calls for equal rights for LGBTQ+ people and is organised by the Cologne Pride association, is one of the largest of its kind in Germany.
Christopher Street Day takes its name from gay club the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street in New York, which was stormed by police in June 1969. The raid sparked the Stonewall Riots, six days of serious clashes between bar patrons and local residents and law enforcement.
