According to a report on the Vienna Online website, police were called to Vienna’s Karlsplatz by security officers after a man allegedly stole two hubcabs from a parked police car. An eyewitness told the website that the presence of around 20 police was “grotesque”, considering the crime.
When the police arrived and attempted to arrest the man around 70 people who had been attending an open-air music event in the square surrounded the police and tried to prevent them from making an arrest.
The police were only able to break out of the circle after using pepper spray on the protesters – who then left the square. The man accused of stealing the hubcaps was reportedly injured by the pepper spray and charged with theft.
