According to newly published figures by the Federal Health Institute, there were more smokers aged 14-19 in 2010 than the year before. The proportion of young people who smoke now stands at 24 percent.
However, the number of teenage smokers has declined compared to 2001, when it amounted to 31 percent of the total smoking population. In the 35-44 age group, the number of smokers has fallen by 10 percentage points compared to 2001, the Institute said in a statement.
The overall number of smokers in Switzerland has remained at 27 percent over the last three years, despite several prevention campaigns and a smoking ban that came into force in May 2010. Tobacco consumption is most popular between 20 and 24 years of age.
