The RoadCross group, representing victims of accidents and family members, said a total of 106,395 people signed a petition to request tougher laws against offenders.
“The initiative requires that speeders will be appropriately punished, their driving licenses revoked, even for life if the offence is repeated, and their vehicle is confiscated,” the group said in a statement.
The petition – called “Protection against Racers” – also calls for higher penalties for drivers who cause accidents that result in damage, deaths or injuries. A minimum of 100,000 signatures is needed to force a vote on any issue in Switzerland.
According to the group, a total of 328 people died in road accidents in 2010, while over 4,500 were seriously injured.
