Oslo to offer drop-in Covid boosters to everyone over 18

All residents in Oslo aged over 18 can get a drop-in coronavirus booster at the vaccination centre in Stovner from Thursday, January 6th.

All residents of Oslo over 18, regardless of the district they live in, can get a booster Covid-19 jab at the Stovner vaccine centre, Oslo Municipality announced on Wednesday.

The municipality said that Stovner has a good capacity for drop-ins and  more centres will open in the coming weeks to allow everyone 18 to show up for walk-in jabs.

Currently, boosters with prior appointment are only available for over-65s at other vaccine centres in the capital.

“In Oslo Municipality, we are concerned about making progress with vaccination. We hope and believe that this additional offer will help those who want to have the opportunity to take the vaccine a little earlier, rather than having to wait for their age group to be called for vaccines,” Tina Arnesen, leader of the vaccination program in Oslo, said on the municipality’s website.

People aged between 18-44 who have already received an appointment date have been asked to wait for their slot rather than attend a drop-in.

Four and a half months or 20 weeks must have passed since the second vaccine dose to become eligible for a booster.

Norway unlikely to offer fourth Covid vaccine dose to under 45s 

Health authorities are unlikely to offer under 45s a fourth Covid jab this autumn, broadcaster TV2 writes. 

“As it looks now, no more doses will be recommended for healthy people under the age of 45, but we are continuously assessing this based on the knowledge we have about the epidemic and the vaccine,” Preben Aavitsland, Chief Physician at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH), told TV2. 

Newswire NTB were informed on Wednesday that health chiefs would make an official recommendation for the coming autumn and winter towards the end of summer. 

In a letter sent to municipalities earlier this month, the NIPH wrote that the most likely outcome was that local authorities would be asked to other a refresher dose to over 65s and those in vulnerable groups.

Aavitsland told TV2 that in the long run, it was possible the oldest would be offered an annual vaccine. However, this would depend on how long the pandemic endured and the spread of new variants, the chief physician, added.
