“This gives us an opportunity and flexibility to scale up our capacity faster if needed. We want to be one step ahead, ”said Björn Eriksson.
He added that the exact details of how the field hospital would be managed, if it becomes relevant, have yet to be planned.
The construction is done in collaboration with the Swedish Armed Forces and will take several days to build.
Region Stockholm said it would be a complete hospital, including intensive care units.
21 people in Sweden have now died after being infected with the coronavirus. The most recent case was a man in his 80s who died at Skåne University Hospital on Saturday. He had an underlying illness.
As of Sunday afternoon, 1,906 people were reported to be infected with the coronavirus, according to the Public Health Authority. Only severe cases of coronavirus are now being tested.
