Spanish director Juanjo Giménez won the short film Palme d’Or on Sunday night for his film, Timecode, becoming the main Spanish winner of the night.
The short film follows the love story between two car park security guards, using the many cameras around the garage to capture unique angles of the long, boring night shifts of the pair.
Giménez dedicated his win to his team, his family and Spanish film director Luis Buñuel, the only Spaniard to have won the Palme d’Or.
“I’m thrilled,” Giménez told Spanish news agency Efe, adding that he was especially delighted to receive the prize from a jury chaired by Japanese director Naomi Kawase.

The Spanish director extolled the virtues of working in the medium, saying that in short films “there is a margin for much more experimentation, there is less financial pressure and the freedom is total”.
Fellow Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar missed out on the top prize with his latest film, Julieta. The main Palme d’Or was awarded to British director Ken Loach’s film, I, Daniel Blake.
