Almost a third of Austrians are single

Around 29% of 1,540 respondents between the ages of 18 and 69 had no partner. The majority of singles (36 percent) live in Vienna and the state of Salzburg, but the survey suggests you are less likely to be single if you live in Lower Austria, Carinthia or Upper Austria.

The biggest group of singles, 38 percent, had been alone for more than three years, and 17 percent of those polled had never been in a relationship. 

Nearly half of the single women polled had been alone for more than three years, whereas for single men this was only 27 percent.

Nearly two-thirds of singles said they longed to be in a committed relationship, and 19 percent (most of them men) said they were more interested in a one night stand or an affair.

“Younger and older singles are more likely to be actively seeking a partner, as they are less busy raising children or working,” said Parship psychologist Caroline Erb. She encouraged lonely singles not to rely on fate but to actively look for a partner to increase their chances of finding Mr or Mrs Right.

Erb added that women tend to be less miserable being single than men as they usually have stronger relationships with family or friends.
