A jury in the town near Hanover will examine the man's complicity in at least 300,000 cases of murder, a court spokeswoman told reporters.

State prosecutors in Hanover accuse the man of working as a volunteer for the Nazi elite from 1944.

They say he was employed to confiscate the luggage of prisoners who arrived at the camp.

A total of 49 people have come forward as plaintiffs in the case. Hearings are expected to begin in spring of next year.

News of the case comes a week after a court in Cologne threw out a case against a former SS soldier who prosecutors said was present at the 1944 massacre of over 600 villagers in the French village of Oradour-sur-Glane.
