Banner year for Danish apples and pears

The right weather combinations have created the perfect conditions for growing fruit that is sweeter, bigger and crispier than normal.

These apples come from The Local's backyard and we can attest that they sure are tasty.
In backyards, fields and orchards throughout Denmark, you can currently find some of the best apples and pears in years.

Perfect weather conditions have produced apples and pears that contain extra sugar, making them not only tastier but able to stay good longer.

“An early spring, a sunny summer and a warm autumn have given pears and apples the best conditions. That means that the fruits are both sweet and crisp this year,” Jan Jager, the chairman for apple and pear growers, Jan Jager, told DR Syd.

A grower in Sønderborg told DR that he expected to harvest 350 tonnes of apples and pears and that this year's pears are among the biggest he's ever witnessed.

But the bumper crop isn’t all good news for growers, who fear they may not be able to get rid of their product in part because of the Russian embargo on Western agricultural products and because of the flood of extra good apples and pears on the domestic market.
