The macabre discovery was made in Motala by a local individual who was out for their morning walk. Instead of encountering the usual trail of abandoned snus packets and cigarette butts the passer-by spotted the remains of an alligator.
Luckily for him the creature was no longer of this earth. Local news channel SVT Östnytt reported that the alligator was approximately a metre long but parts of the body were missing.
"He's in a freezer with us at the police station," Thomas Ericsson of the Motala police force told Aftonbladet.
When probed if the cops had to throw out some ice-cream to squeeze in the alligator Ericsson said; "No, it wasn't so bad. He was only half there."
He added that it was likely that other animals had been feasting on the creature before its discovery.
The officer added that he was perplexed as to how an alligator, which is native only to the USA and China, ended up in southern Sweden. He suggested that the creature had perhaps grown too big for its Swedish owner.
The police are set to contact the county administrative board and possibly the Swedish Board of Agriculture as they proceed with the case. At present it remains unclear whether a crime has been committed.
In 2007 The Local reported another case of an alligator discovery in southern Sweden when a dead reptile was found under a bush in Malmö.
