Man charged after Malmö man dangled off bridge

A man has been charged on the suspicion of aggravated assault after another man was badly beaten and nearly thrown off a bridge in Malmö, while his 18-month-old son looked on.

"We have five or six witnesses who saw the whole thing, or parts of it, and several of them have identified the man who has now been charged," prosecutor Neela Frisell told the Dagens Nyheter newspaper.

The attack took place in September when an immigrant man was attacked in the suburbs of Malmö while out with his toddler child. The gang attack saw the 32-year-old victim held up against the railings of an overpass and even dangled above the road below. The gang members threatened to kill the 18-month-old child during the attack.

Police described the incident as a race-related hate crime at the time. Frisell said on Wednesday that it couldn't be proven that the victim's race was the motive for the attack, and did not press any race-hate charges.

While initial reports said the attackers hurled racial slurs during the attack, prosecutors added it was impossible to determine who exactly was behind them.

The charged man has denied committing any crime.
