Goalless Malmö crash out of Europa League

Malmö FF was one of three Swedish football clubs to be knocked out of Europa League contention on Thursday night after they failed to score a goal against Welsh side Swansea.

Goalless Malmö crash out of Europa League

Swansea ensured their place in the Europa League play-offs after a 0-0 draw at Malmö preserved their 4-0 advantage from the first leg of their third qualifying round clash.

The Welsh club, playing in Europe for the first time in 22 years, saw Michu and Wayne Routledge go close in Sweden while Wilfried Bony had a ‘goal’ ruled out for offside.

“Overall, I’m very satisfied,” said Swansea coach Michael Laudrup.

“It was a professional performance from ourselves, they had a chance in the first minute but then I think we dominated the game.

“There were also many positives. We have played two games, kept two clean sheets and not given many chances away to the opposition.

“If we had to find a negative then it is the fact that we have to do better offensively. But we can’t always dominate games, and the clean sheets are very important because it breeds confidence.”

While Swansea disposed of Malmö, Gefle suffered a 0-2 loss to Karabach in Azerbaijan, ending their chances of continued Europa League play.

Meanwhile in Switzerland, Thun beat Swedish side Häcken 1-0 to advance 3-1 on aggregate.

The only remaining Swedish team with any hopes of continued European play-off competition is Elfsborg, which is set for Europa League play after being knocked out of the Champions League by Celtic on Wednesday.

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
