Spanish league fixes date for ‘Clasico’ showdown

Spanish football fixtures unveiled on Tuesday show that archrivals Barcelona and Real Madrid will face off in late October in next season's first "El Clasico", a highly charged football clash that grips the nation.

The dates were decided by a draw held by the Spanish football federation Tuesday, which set the fixtures for the 38 match days of the 2013–14 season, which will run from August 17th this year to May 18th, 2014.

Real Madrid, under new coach Carlo Ancelotti, will head to the Camp Nou to face Barcelona on the weekend of October 27, with the return match in the Santiago Bernabeu on the weekend of March 23rd.

The exact date of La Liga fixtures is often decided nearer the time to avoid television scheduling conflicts.

Ancelotti will be hoping to improve on his predecessor Jose Mourinho's performance last season when Real surrendered their league title to Barcelona by 15 points and won no silverware other than the Spanish Super Cup.

Barcelona have strengthened their squad with Brazilian superstar Neymar for a reported €57 million ($73 million).

The 21-year-old led Brazil to victory over Spain in the Confederations Cup this summer.

He joins two-time La Liga record goalscorer Lionel Messi, at the Catalan club, replacing Spanish striker David Villa who was sold to Atlético Madrid for just €5.1 million.

Villa will face his former teammates when Spanish Cup winners Atlético go head to head with Barcelona in the first leg of the Spanish Supercup, scheduled for August 21st.

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
