Swedes sweep top French football awards

Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic scooped up France's Ligue 1 player of the year award on Monday, with Sweden's Lotta Schelin taking home the same honour for the top French women's league.

Ibrahimovic had a remarkable season for Paris Saint-Germain, scoring 29 goals in total, more than any other player has scored in one season since 1990.

Together with British superstar David Beckham, Zlatan helped the Parisian side win its third ever title.

“It’s a big honour for me and I want to thank my team-mates for this,” Ibrahimovic said at a press conference in Paris, according to the official Uefa website.

“I want to say that all the other nominees would have deserved it.”

In what was likely Beckham’s last game on Sunday, Zlatan managed to find the net twice against Brest.

Meanwhile on the women’s side, Swedish striker Lotta Schelin won the player of the year for her season with Olympique Lyonnais, a team which has finished first for seven consecutive years.

“I was surprised but very happy,” she said via video at the ceremony.

“I want to thank the whole gang and the coaches.”

Schelin also topped the league in goals scored this season, finding the net 23 times. She has signed a new three-year contract with the Lyon team.

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
