Swedish football: The ultimate guide to the 2013 Allsvenskan

With play in Sweden's top football league set to kick off at the weekend, contributor Nic Townsend offers the lowdown on each team and their chances of taking home the 2013 Allsvenskan title.

Swedish football: The ultimate guide to the 2013 Allsvenskan

Throughout Europe it’s still the middle of football season yet the competition is practically over. Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Celtic and Juventus, have all but clinched their respective titles. But fortunately for football fans, Sweden’s Allsvenskan, arguably the most open league in Europe, is kicking off this weekend.

After winning the Allsvenskan title last year, IF Elfsborg begins the new season as the clear favourite. They’ve certainly been the most consistent team over the past few years and on paper have the strongest squad.

That being said, it’s important to bear in mind that six different teams have won the league in the last six years, with pre-season favourites often failing to live up to expectations.

In fact it’s been a decade (Djurgården in 2003) since a team has managed defend their Allsvenskan title.

Unlike many of Europe’s other top leagues, no one team has the financial clout to dominate. There are no billionaires distorting the competition by playing real life fantasy football. As soon as a club reaches a certain level of success, they’re generally forced to sell their best players mid-season.

All these factors help keep the Allsvenskan competitive and unpredictable. Elfsborg might be the favourite, but both Malmö FF and AIK are not far behind.

Helsingborg, IFK Göteborg and most surprisingly of all, BK Häcken, also all have a very realistic chance of winning the league.

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
