When an elderly woman in a care home in Ystad, southern Sweden, found that her bank balance had plummeted from 112,000 kronor ($17,400) to just 400 kronor, she was lost for words.
An internal police investigation was launched and a tip-off from another employee led to one of the home’s staff members.
The suspect has now been charged with fraud, but blamed the theft on his own exhaustion, wrote the Skånska Dagbladet newspaper.
He claimed that the atmosphere in the elderly home had turned him to drinking.
The now ex-employee confessed to police that he had spent the pensioner’s money on internet porn, a new home cinema, and copious amounts of alcohol during a binge last summer.
He claimed, however, to have taken only 11,000 kronor from the account, which he accessed through the woman’s bank card.
The man has now been charged with fraud, a crime which can lead to up to two years in prison.
Police confiscated a home cinema worth 6,000 kronor from the man’s home.
