Bayern’s Alaba brushes off English insult

A black Bayern Munich player who was born in Vienna and is a regular in the Austrian national team managed to keep his cool when a politician assumed he was not a German-speaker and spoke to him in English.

“How do you do?” asked clueless Günther Platter, head of the state of Tirol, in English when greeting David Alaba at a training camp. The assumption was that Alaba was not from Austria.

The football website goal.com reported on Wednesday that Alaba, who is known around the world for his lightning reactions in the service of Bayern and Austria, assured Platter, “You can easily speak German with me. I’m Austrian.”

Alaba, 19, who has a Filipino mother and Nigerian father, was born in Vienna and raised in the Austrian capital – he is often to be seen playing for his national team, and was Austrian Footballer of the Year in 2011, the youngest player to receive that honour.

Platter’s effort at English was all the more embarrassing because he used to be Austrian interior minister – and his former ministry oversees sports in the country.

“I am, as one can see, no football expert, and would like to apologise for this faux pas,” Platter said in a statement for the website tirol.ORF.at.

“I thank David Alaba for his serene reaction and wish him and the Austrian national team success at the two friendly matches in Innsbruck.”

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
