This is the latest in a string of sackings sweeping through the Bundesliga, with seven coaches having parted company with German league teams this season.

The 42-year-old’s final game in charge of Kaiserslautern was on Sunday at home to high-flying Schalke 04. They were beaten 4-1, their 17th consecutive match without a win.

“After the defeat to Schalke and lots of intense discussions, we have come to a group decision that we have to take this step,” said Kaiserslautern chairman Stefan Kuntz.

“In the past few weeks and months, we have tried many different measures to get the team back on track. Unfortunately, none have been successful.”

A new coach should be appointed soon, but assistant coach Oliver Schäfer and goalkeeping coach Gerald Ehrmann have already been installed as interim coaches for Saturday’s match at Freiburg, who are 16th in the table.

Hertha Berlin coach Markus Babbel and manager Michael Skibbe were both sacked this season, while Marcus Sorg, coach at SC Freiburg, Michael Oenning, manager of Hamburger SV and Holger Stanislawski, 1899 Hoffenheim’s manager were all also sacked by their respective teams.

But most recently, Cologne parted company with director of sport Volker Finke in early March.

Schalke 04 lost their manager Ralf Rangnick in September to ill health, as he was suffering from a burn-out.

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
