As long-standing football rivals England and Germany gear up for the Euro 2012 soccer tournament this summer in Ukraine and Poland, the competition has also heated up online.

Mass circulation paper Bild reported Saturday that the German side has overtaken England in the popularity leagues, by having more fans on Facebook.

Up to now England had the head start when it came to attracting supporters on the social media site. But Germany, who the paper triumphantly pointed out only set up their Facebook fanpage in December, has already steamed ahead.

Around 1.15 million German football enthusiasts follow their team’s posts on Facebook, which include interviews and photographs.

In contrast archrivals England only have about 1.1 million fans, 40,000 fewer than the Germans.

Bild even crowed that “Germany is already celebrating its first Euro 2012 victory!”

Ralf Köttker, the German Football Association’s media director, welcomed the news.

“When it comes to our team, the Facebook fans are agreed: ‘I like it and thumbs up for Jogi’s boys’,” he told Bild , referring to Joachim or “Jogi” Löw, the team’s coach.

Köttker added that he hoped many more German fans will follow the team on Facebook.

“We won’t let the online title be taken away from us,” he said.

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
