Sports digest: Elmander fires Toulouse into Champions League

Sports digest is The Local's round-up of the week's sporting action involving Swedes at home and abroad.

Swedish international striker Joahn Elmander scored for Toulouse at the weekend in a historic 3-1 win over Bordeaux. The victory meant that Toulouse finished third in the league and grabbed the last available Champions League spot just ahead of Rennes, Lens, Sochaux, and Bordeaux.

In Sweden, last year’s champions Elfsborg have taken a three-point lead at the top of Allsvenskan after three victories on the trot.

An away win at Hammarby followed on the heels of recent triumphs against Gothenburg and Trelleborg.

It is worth remembering however that the Borås club has played one game more than its nearest rivals.

Kalmar missed their chance to join Elfsborg on 16 points when they slumped to a surprise home defeat against slow starters Trelleborg.

Second-placed Malmö meanwhile were booed off the pitch by their own supporters after they failed to convert an early lead against Gefle into three points. The match finished 1-1.

Athletics

Carolina Klüft won her eighteenth pentathlon in a row at Götzis in Austria. Klüft had hoped to make a new world record attempt but strong wins soon put paid to her ambitions.

The event also marked the return of Ludmila Blonska, the Ukrainian athlete who was suspended for four years after being found to have used anabolic steroids.

Tennis

Sweden finished bottom of its group at the World Team Cup championship in Dusseldorf. But the Swedish team can take some solace from having rounded off the tournament with a 2-1 win over the USA.

Robin Söderling and Thomas Johansson each registered two-set victories in their singles match-ups with James Blake and Mike Bryan.

The Americans later scored a consolation doubles victory as Mike and Bob Bryan saw off Söderling and Johansson in two sets.

The two Swedes will be hoping to take their good form with them to the French Open. Should he advance to the third round, Söderling is scheduled to meet the king of the clay court, Rafael Nadal.

VIDEO: Spain’s La Liga reviews video of boy racially abusing Vinicius

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
