“We are aware of the case. It concerns a man in his sixties who comes from northern Sweden who was reported missing in Barcelona at the weekend,” said Teo Zetterman at the Swedish foreign ministry to The Local on Tuesday.
The man, from Piteå in northern Sweden, was on a weekend break with his partner in the Catalonian capital when he disappeared, according to a report in the Piteå-Tidningen daily.
The man’s disappearance has been reported to the police and the Swedish foreign ministry has been in contact with local authorities. He is now the subject of a search by Spanish police and it has been reported that Interpol are involved.
“We have been in contact with the Spanish authorities. The Spanish police are in charge of the investigation,” Zetterman said.
Zetterman was unable to confirm whether Interpol were involved in the case and underline that as the man disappeared only a few days ago the case remains open.
“He was reported missing only this weekend, so this is a relatively fresh case. According to our information he remains missing,” he said.
