Three year old child injured in ‘racist’ assault in Dresden

Police in Saxony have reported that three men attacked a mother and her toddler in a racially motivated assault, injuring the child in the process.

The assault took place at a play park in Dresden where the men – all aged between 25 and 30 – racially abused the 32-year-old mother before one of them pushed the child. The toddler fell over and was slightly injured.

The men, who are believed to be German, fled the scene. Police are now calling for witnesses who saw the incident at the play park near Otto Dix Ring.

“There is clearly a racial motive to the crime,” a police spokesperson told Spiegel.

Saxony is considered to be one of the hot spots of racism in Germany. Numerous court cases have taken place against right-wing extremist organisations in the state in recent years. It is also the hub of the Islamophobic Pegida movement.

The subject of racism in German society has gained renewed interest since the killing of a black man by a white police officer in the US led to anti-racism protests across the western world.

A study released on Tuesday showed that complaints by ethnic minorities of discriminatory behaviour increased by 10 percent last year.

At the supermarket checkout, a man insulted the party’s state election candidate Steffen Much without reason and grabbed him by his T-shirt, the party’s regional association said on Saturday.

Much was unharmed, according to party sources, and filed a police report against the attacker, who he knew.

“I am glad that Steffen Much was not physically harmed,” said the co-chairman of the Left Party’s regional association, Christian Schaft.

“Insults and attacks like these are intended to intimidate everyone who is committed to an open and democratic society.”

There have been several attacks on politicians across the country recently.
