“He stands accused of attempted child abduction,” Kent Öberg of the Swedish foreign ministry confirmed to daily Aftonbladet.
According to the paper, the man who is in his fifties, travelled to the country to bring back a child, who had been brought to the country by its father against the mother’s will.
However, the action didn’t go as planned and the former guard is now jailed in the country pending trial.
“We are keeping up with developments. If any particulars about the case surface it should be reported to Stockholm,” Öberg told the paper.
Another Swedish man is also behind bars in Tunisia for the same crime, according to the foreign ministry.
Both have been assigned legal representation.
A Norwegian woman is also involved, according to the paper, and Norwegian authorities have confirmed that a woman was arrested in the country on Sunday.
She was later released, however, but is not allowed to leave the country.
According to Aftonbladet, the Swedish man has a long record of working for private security firms and worked for a time as the bodyguard of a Swedish prime minister.
