Five to 15 centimetres of fresh snow is expected in large parts of Sweden by midnight on Saturday. Rain is also expected in the south, where temperatures are just above freezing.
There is a big chance that the snow will remain in the ground until Christmas, but, as always, the weather is not entirely predictable.
“The way it looks right now it seems like there will be mainly dry weather and minus degrees on Christmas eve, with the exception of the coast in the far south and the Baltic island of Gotland,” said SMHI meteorologist Lisa Frost.
“I don’t want to make any promises since there are so many days left,” she added. “But I can say that prospects are good for a white Christmas in most part of the country.”
The blizzard that is currently moving north across the country has caused some disruption.
Power cuts left around 10,000 people without electricity on Saturday, with most of those affected being in the Stockholm and Uppsala areas.
A Class 1 warning is lowest level alert, but conditions on the roads are precarious.
The heavy snowfall in the southern region of Skåne caused disruptions in traffic between Friday and Saturday.
A truck slid off the highway near Gränna in the South, blocking the traffic there. The truck’s fuel tank burst and 250 litres of petrol spilled out into the snow.
On Saturday evening the blizzard will hit the north, which will see the most snow on Sunday. Milder weather is expected in most parts of the country on Monday.
