The 55-year-old man was killed on Sunday afternoon during a hunt in Montrem in the Dordogne.
The man, who has been described as an experienced hunter, was fatally struck in the chest with a stray bullet at around 4.30pm.
It remains unknown which shooter was responsible for the death, as several hunters had fired their weapons at the time.
It also remains unknown if the shot was a direct hit, or whether the bullet had ricocheted.
Police have launched an investigation.
The area was not far from where another man was killed in November, also in a hunt for wild boars.
