The unfortunate animal got pinned down in its precarious position inside a garden in the Austrian town of Eichgraben in the state of Lower Austria. Only the hedgehog’s small head could be seen peeping out of the pipe.
The worried homeowner who spotted the hedgehog called the fire department. After consultation with the homeowner, the firemen cut the sewage pipe open to free the trapped animal. It took the fire brigade 45 minutes to rescue the hedgehog.
Luckily the hedgehog escaped from its adventure without any injuries and was set free again in a safe place in the garden.
Expert Tinus Habich who works for the 'Hedgehog Foundation' explained that hedgehogs are known for following their noses. He said: “When a hedgehog smells food, this is all he can think about at that moment. They do not think about danger, and that's why they often get into trouble.”
Habich said that “hedgehogs cannot walk backwards either, and their spines also prevent it, which is why I have already seen so many of them stuck in all kinds of pipes. I would advise people to make sure such openings are closed off to avoid a repeat of similar incidents.”
