In an article titled "Princes Letizia's Hat Is Bringing Back Bad Millinery Memories", the online news site The Huffington Post took aim at Princess Letizia's penchant for "pantsuits, pantsuits and more pantsuits".
The news site confessed, however, that Letizia, Princess of Asturias, had made a special effort for Tuesday's investiture of the new King of the Kingdom of the Netherlands Willem-Alexander.
Letizia, Princess of Asturias, was described as "quite elegant" in a blue lace gown by Varela and matching heels by Margriet".
But it was the princess' risky millinery choice that came in for particular comment with The Huffington Post choosing to describe it as a "strange pancake-like hat".
The site than ran a cheeky reader poll in which it asked readers to decide whether the hat was "So Ugly!" or "So Elegant!"
Over 70 percent of poll voters were in favour of the hat, suggesting that Letizia may have more style than the Huffington Post give her credit for.
King Willem-Alexander became The Netherlands' ruling monarch on Tuesday after Queen Beatrix announced in January that she would abdicate.
