One killed as storms sweep Germany

Update: The summer sun turned to strong rainstorms over the weekend and into the start of the work week with one fireman found dead on Monday during heavy downpours.

The body of a fireman was found by a creek on Monday in Rustenfelde Thuringia after heavy rainfall, local police said.

It has still not been confirmed how the man died, though it appeared he may have drowned.

Another storm over the weekend saw lightning strikes on a football field injure 26 players and spectators on Sunday, according to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

The football game in Bräunsdorf, Saxony, had to be halted as the wounded were taken to hospital for treatment.

The German Weather Service (DWD) said on Sunday that much of the country will continue to experience rain throughout the week before things heat up again for the weekend.

Rain showers are expected across the country this week, sweeping from the northeast to the southwest, the DWD said.

Southern Germany will continue to experience showers and thunderstorms until nearly the end of the week, but with the rain will also come cooler temperatures – a relief for the area that has seen mercury rising above 40C in recent weeks.

Storms in the north will usher in comparatively warmer weather.

Areas in the center of the country will experience particularly heavy downpours, especially in North Rhine-Westphalia, northern Hesse and southeast Lower Saxony.

While the rain is expected to peter out by Wednesday in the north, the south is predicted to still experience storms into Thursday, though most of the rest of the country will be sunny.

But by the weekend, most of Germany should once again see higher, warmer temperatures.

‘Turbo spring’: Germany to see temperatures above 25C

Germany is set for a blast of warm weather in the coming week as the colder spell eases off.

'Turbo spring': Germany to see temperatures above 25C

“The late winter weather of the past few days with frost and snow is a thing of the past for the time being, and spring will kick into turbo gear over the next few days,” said meteorologist Adrian Leyser from the German Weather Service (DWD) on Friday.

Temperatures are expected to rise sharply over the weekend with plenty of sunshine, forecasters said. In Germany anything above 25C is classed as a summer day. “The summer mark of 25C will be cracked regionally as early as Sunday,” said Leyser.

It comes as snow and hail hit Germany last week, and temperatures fell below freezing in some places.

But showers and thunderstorms are still possible in the west and north of Germany. Maximum temperatures there are expected to reach around 20C.

According to the DWD, spring will get a little damper on Monday, with a few rain spells.  “However, the next low pressure system over Western Europe is preparing to turn on the warm air jet again from Tuesday,” said the meteorologist.

On Wednesday – which is a public holiday across Germany for International Workers’ Day – temperatures could soar nearer 30C.

“In the south and east, we are even approaching the 30C mark,” said Leyser. However, the weather will remain “susceptible to disruption”, said Leyser, especially in the west where there is a risk of isolated and sometimes severe thunderstorms.
