Experts at Il Meteo.it predict the bad weather will arrive on Saturday morning, creating dangerous conditions for the thousands of drivers up and down the country who are heading out of the city for the holiday weekend.
Showers and storms are expected to arrive in the north of the country over Lombardy, Aosta Valley, Liguria and Emilia-Romagna, but will make their way south across Puglia, Calabria and Abruzzo over the course of the afternoon.
The Italian Civil Defence Office has issued further extreme weather warnings for the north east of the country which has already been battered by a landslide and a tornado.
But the worst of the weather will hit on Sunday, when rain and storms are forecast across the bel paese from top to toe.
Temperatures are set to plummet by between six and 10 degrees Celsius nationwide, with maximum temperatures of 24 predicted for Milan and Turin, 23 for Naples and just 21 for Rome.
