TURIN

Jobless filmmaker roams Turin dressed as Jesus

An out-of-work filmmaker who has spent the past few weeks walking the streets of Turin dressed as Jesus to earn some extra cash has become an internet celebrity. But Italian police haven’t taken so kindly to the man’s holy attire.

The Turin shroud isn’t the only ‘divine’ relic drawing tourists to the northern Italian city, it would seem. For the past few weeks a man dressed as none other than Jesus has been spotted wandering around Turin, much to the delight of locals and tourists.

Clad in white robes and sandals, the mysterious impersonator was spotted hugging passers-by, telling parables and posing for photos with tourists, who are then encouraged to put their spare change into a basket labelled 'Jesus Crowdfunding'.

But not everyone is charmed by the man's messianic presence and he has apparently been stopped five times by police.

On his Facebook page “Jesus in Turin”, in which the man documents his journey through the city, he described being stopped by police for the third time.

“It’s the sixth day in Turin. I’m near the Duomo, hugging people for free. The police are checking me for the third time.

“Some worshippers have complained,” they said:‘We have to intervene, you see? Be good and stay far away from this area… You’ve already been warned.’

‘But what law am I breaking?’

‘That of good sense.’

‘But there’s no good sense in all that. If you want I can give you a hug.’

‘If you want I can take you to the police station.’

‘Ok.’”

By Monday afternoon the Facebook page had over 10,000 ‘likes’, with several of his virtual ‘disciples’ posting messages of support.

“Continue on your way… you’re not doing anything wrong!!! You’re not breaking any law!” wrote one Facebook user.

“I don’t know who you are or why you are doing all this, but I think you’re amazing,” chimed in another.

According to Corriere della Sera the man lost his job as a film editor, spurring him to find more creative ways of making money.

The next edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in May 2022 will be held in the northern Italian city of Turin, organisers confirmed on Friday.

“Turin has won the race to become the host city of the 66th Eurovision Song Contest, having triumphed over 16 other competing bids,” read a statement on the contest’s official website.

“The Grand Final will be held in PalaOlimpico on Saturday 14 May with Semi-Finals on 10 and 12 May.”

“We won! Turin has won!” mayor Chiara Appendino wrote in a celebratory post on Facebook.

Italian state broadcaster Rai said Turin had beaten off competition from the cities of Milan, Bologna, Rimini and Pesaro to host the event.

Turin will be the third Italian city to host the event after Naples (which hosted in 1965) and Rome (1991), after Rome-based rock band Måneskin’s victory in Rotterdam earlier this year with the song ‘Zitti e buoni’.

That event, watched by 183 million people, was Italy’s third Eurovision win and its first for three decades.

‘Turin is the perfect Host City for the 66th Eurovision Song Contest,” said Eurovision Song Contest Executive Supervisor Martin Österdahl.

“As we saw during the 2006 Winter Olympics, PalaOlimpico exceeds all the requirements needed to stage a global event of this scale and we have been very impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment from the City of Turin who will welcome thousands of fans next May.”

“This will be the first Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Italy in 30 years and, together with our Host broadcaster Rai, we are determined to make it a special one.’

Turin was home to the 2006 Winter Olympics and is hosting the ATP Finals tennis tournament next month.
