Last-minute wage deal for rail workers

Railway workers and employees will receive around a 2.4 percent wage increase as of July 1st. This compromise between the unions and the employers was found overnight Wednesday, shortly ahead of a planned strike.

The minimum wage for railway workers has been raised to €1,500 and all employees will receive at least €55 more than before.

Thomas Scheiber, chief negotiator of the employers, said that the raises were based on income – meaning that those earning the least would have a higher raise than those on the top salaries. This solution was acceptable for the employers, he added.

At the same time Scheiber said that he expected no more cancellations and delays which had occurred because of staff meetings organised by the trade unions. There would be an agreement about that, he added.

Roman Hebenstreit, employee representative with the state railways ÖBB and trade unionist, said that he was content. "We have reached our goal as we managed to prevent income losses."

The employees would be informed during the next days about the deal, he added.
