Dane could face death penalty in Indonesia
A 56-year-old Danish man was detained with 1.48 kilograms of crystal meth. Under Indonesia's drug laws, which are among the strictest in the world, that could be enough to warrant the death penalty.

The foreign ministry has confirmed that a Danish citizen has been detained in Indonesia on drug charges.
The 56-year-old Danish man was detained on June 8 while carrying 1.48 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, worth an estimated 1.9 billion Indonesian rupiah (872,00 kroner, $159,000).
AFP reported that under Indonesia’s anti-narcotics laws, trafficking more than five grams of drugs can be punishable by death.
Although the arrest was first reported on June 13, it was not confirmed by Danish authorities until yesterday.
“It is correct that a Danish citizen has been jailed in Jakarta,” the foreign ministry wrote to Ekstra Bladet. “The embassy is providing consular assistance and has visited the prisoner, who has been assigned a lawyer.”
According to AFP, foreigners are regularly caught trying to smuggle drugs into Indonesia, many on the hard-partying resort island of Bali. Several foreigners are currently on death row in the country.
The foreign ministry has not commented further on the arrested Danish man.
