Rainy weekend to ruin early spring fever

Germany has been revelling in balmy spring weather the past week. But as low pressure sweeps in over the weekend, so will rain and wind, according the state weather service the DWD.

While temperatures across the country have soared to as high as 20C, pulling people out onto the streets and into queues for ice cream, the weather won't continue into the weekend.

Friday could see some embers of this early spring, DWD forecast, as the sun will shine across most of the country. The north western states may be a little duller but on the whole it will be a dry day to end the working week.

Highs should be around 13C to 18C with a fresher wind along the northern coast.

But as night falls, rain will bear down, initially falling on the northern states and along the Baltic coast. This will be accompanied by a lively southwesterly wind – with some gale-force blasts nearer the sea.

The south and central states should stay dry, but temperatures will plummet to 0C in rural areas. Due to a clear sky, there could be some frost. Up north, there will be lows of around 6C.

Saturday will see rain spreading across Germany right down to the Alps in the far south. The snowfall level will drop to 600 metres in the central hilly regions. Highs should be between 9C and 13C, putting a dampener on lounging around outdoors.

It will also be rather blustery up north, with fierce gusts whipping along the North and Baltic coastlines. Cities in the northern half of the country should also hold onto their hats, as with rain will come wind.

Saturday night will see little change for most, except for intensifying rain in the very north and around the southern Alps. Lows will settle between 8C and 2C and in higher areas there could again be a light frost.

As Sunday arrives, clouds will continue to cloak the northern and eastern states. Elsewhere the sun will peek through occasionally – more so in the southwest. It will remain chillier than last week though, with highs of 7C to 13C.

“This [the cooler weather] would appear to be the trend until Wednesday,” said DWD meteorologist Anna Wieczorek.

‘Turbo spring’: Germany to see temperatures above 25C

Germany is set for a blast of warm weather in the coming week as the colder spell eases off.

'Turbo spring': Germany to see temperatures above 25C

“The late winter weather of the past few days with frost and snow is a thing of the past for the time being, and spring will kick into turbo gear over the next few days,” said meteorologist Adrian Leyser from the German Weather Service (DWD) on Friday.

Temperatures are expected to rise sharply over the weekend with plenty of sunshine, forecasters said. In Germany anything above 25C is classed as a summer day. “The summer mark of 25C will be cracked regionally as early as Sunday,” said Leyser.

It comes as snow and hail hit Germany last week, and temperatures fell below freezing in some places.

But showers and thunderstorms are still possible in the west and north of Germany. Maximum temperatures there are expected to reach around 20C.

According to the DWD, spring will get a little damper on Monday, with a few rain spells.  “However, the next low pressure system over Western Europe is preparing to turn on the warm air jet again from Tuesday,” said the meteorologist.

On Wednesday – which is a public holiday across Germany for International Workers’ Day – temperatures could soar nearer 30C.

“In the south and east, we are even approaching the 30C mark,” said Leyser. However, the weather will remain “susceptible to disruption”, said Leyser, especially in the west where there is a risk of isolated and sometimes severe thunderstorms.
