According to newly released statistics from the Federal Statistical Office, the number of employed people in Switzerland increased by 1.4 percent in the last quarter of 2010, compared to the same period the year before, to a total of 4.621 million people. In a statement, the Office also said that the number of employed people within the European Union rose by 0.3 percent.
The figures show that the number of employed people of Swiss nationality has increased by 0.4 percent to 3.351 million between the 4th quarter of 2009 and 2010, while foreign workers also rose to 1.270 million – an increase by 4 percent.
During the same period, the unemployment rate fell from 4.8 percent to 4.2 percent in Switzerland, while in the EU, it rose from 9.3 percent to 9.5 percent.
Switzerland’s economy is one of the world’s most stable, with low unemployment rates and high per capita incomes.
