The Swiss weather service said on tuesday that the slight rain showers that dampened surfaces across the country over the Easter weekend have not done much to ease the drought.
According to the national weather office Meteosuisse, almost all Swiss cantons have issued a fire warning or campfire bans. Danger charts are constantly updated online and currently show “serious danger” levels across the country.
Switzerland’s recent dry spell, coupled with summer temperatures, is threatening to become “one of the most significant droughts since 1864,” the year when records began in Switzerland, Olivier Duding, a climatologist from Meteosuisse was quoted as saying by AFP.
The agency also reported that in the canton of Zurich, officials began moving trout from a river before their habitat dried up.
