"The Court does not hesitate to characterize the action as cruel, in light of the fear and pain he inflicted on the dog before it died," the ruling of Sør-Trøndelag District Court read.

The man pleaded guilty during last week's trial, confessing to all charges, but he claimed that he had been forced to drown the dog because he could no longer afford to keep it.

The dog's remains were found on a pebble beach close to where the man lived about a month after the animal and its cage was thrown into the sea.

The man was also ordered to pay a fine of 5,000 Norwegian kroner ($836), and has been barred from owning a dog for ten years.
