High and low pressure systems clashed over the country over the weekend, causing violent storms particularly in the states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.
Strong winds blew over a large tent at an event in the Neu-Ulm area of Bavaria, leaving one person with severe injuries and three others lightly injured. In Regensburg, tin roofs came off several sheds and in Illertissen, a bolt of lighting hit a townhouse.
In Baden-Württemberg, 2,500 scouts were forced to take shelter in army barracks after high winds blew apart their camp. Thirty eight of them received medical treatment and 10 ended up in hospital.
Lightning struck a camp site in Brandenburg, where a group of school children were staying. Twenty two of them were taken to hospital and kept in for observation – purely to be on the safe side, a police spokesman told the paper on Monday.
Stretches of train tracks were also blocked off, mainly because of falling trees. On the A8 motorway in Bavaria, several trees were blown onto the road and damaged a few cars. Roads around Stuttgart were flooded.
