The ships will be sunk on a broken dyke in an effort to halt the flood waters in the area. Sand bags will also be dropped from helicopters along critical points, the Berliner Zeitung reported on Saturday
Authorities in Magdeburg, the region’s capital, said the action could last all day and success is not guaranteed. An area of about 200 square kilometers has already been flooded.
The ships are expected to help plug up holes in the dike in the area. Hundreds of residents have already been evacuated from the area. The dyke break has caused massive flooding in the area and several hundred cubic meters of water per second is still flooding farms and towns in the region.
