Wild weather forecast for weekend

Extreme weather producing thunder, squalls and hail storms is expected to make for an unusual weekend, the German Weather Service (DWD) said on Friday.

“Slight air pressure differences will determine Germany’s weather over the coming days,” DWD meteorologist Stefan Külzer said in a statement.

“This means that moist, warm air will produce storm conditions in the south while brisk North Sea air will cool regions in the north.”

Southern and eastern regions could be hit by thunder storms and even hail during the last part of Friday.

Highs are expected to reach between 19 and 25 degrees, while temperatures in coastal regions near the North and Baltic seas will not exceed 17 degrees, but stay relatively dry.

Cloud cover will disperse for much of the country during Friday night, though thunderstorms are still possible in the southeast.

Fog could also creep up in areas that have received rain. Temperatures will drop to between seven and 13 degrees, though the extreme north could get colder.

Most of the country will see a sunny start to the weekend, though southeastern regions could see some showers on Saturday afternoon, potentially developing into heavy rain and hail.

The north and northwest will remain partly sunny, with occasional showers.

The mercury could climb to a balmy 26 degrees in parts of the country, while temperatures in coastal regions are unlikely to exceed 18 degrees.

Lingering storm clouds will disperse on Saturday evening, especially in the east and south, while the northwest and west could see clouds bringing rain. The air will cool to between nine and 14 degrees.

Thunderstorms are possible on Sunday, especially in southern and eastern regions. Storms are unlikely between the state of Schleswig-Holstein and the northern Rhine valley, though these regions could still see showers.

Top temperatures will reach 22 degrees in the northwest, 26 degrees in the east, and 18 on the North Sea coast. Winds out of the south and west will blow softly, but squalls are possible in stormy areas.

Thunderstorms could continue during Sunday night in the south and east, but the rest of the country will see clouds clearing from the northwest. Temperatures will sink to 13 degrees in the south and east, while the north and west will dip to a chilly six degrees.

On Monday, the Alpine foothills and the extreme north could see showers and storms, but the rest of the country will remain mostly clear.

The afternoon will see temperatures reach 17 degrees in coastal regions and 26 degrees in the Rhineland, while the north will be cooled by brisk westerly winds.

Skies will be mostly clear on Monday night, with temperatures between eight and 13 degrees.

Severe weather warnings issued as Germany braces for more storms

Extreme weather warnings for heavy rainfall remain in place in parts of Germany on Friday following flooding in the south. There is also a chance of thunderstorms at the weekend.

Severe weather warnings issued as Germany braces for more storms

Severe weather is expected in the southwest of the country on Friday, with the heaviest rain expected in Saarbrücken, as well as the surrounding areas of Saarland and southern Rhineland-Palatinate.

In these areas Germany’s weather service (DWD) has level 4 warnings in place – meaning that the rain is expected to be extremely heavy (more than 40 litres per square metre in an hour, or 60 litres per square metre in 6 hours).

Slightly less severe, but still heavy continuous rain can also be expected in the surrounding regions, extending as far as Stuttgart and Mainz.

Speaking to Bild newspaper, Climatologist Dr. Karsten Brandt suggested that the heavy precipitation and thunderstorms will continue to move northwest, even into southern North-Rhine Westphalia (Aachen).

There are also wind warnings in parts of the country, with squalls expected on the Brocken and the Fichtelberg mountains, as well as in the Black Forest and in the Alps.

Currently, the highest wind warnings are in Dresden and southern Bavaria near the Alps.

Friday’s weather warnings come in the wake of chaotic weather that flooded Nuremberg and parts of Bavaria Thursday night, where many roads flooded. Cars were submerged in water and bus routes were cancelled.

A number of household cellars also flooded as well as a large underground car park at the Technical University.

What will the weekend bring?

Beyond the area of severe weather warnings but not beyond the reach of the storm, Cologne will have some rain on Friday which may continue on through the weekend.

Germany’s northern and eastern regions have dodged the recent bout of storms so far, but in Berlin scattered thunderstorms can be expected to move in by Sunday afternoon. This may put a dampener on the Karneval der Kulturen parade.

In Bremen and Hamburg, residents can expect some rain showers on Sunday and Monday, with a chance of thunderstorms as well.

In Munich and Nuremberg, it looks as if the worst is over. Some small showers may continue into Saturday, but Bavarian residents can look forward to a sunny Sunday ahead of the public holiday on Monday for Pentecost.
