The name Marie has held the top spot for girls since 1999, excluding the year of 2008, when Sophie took the honour. Meanwhile the distinguished Maximilian was the most common boys’ name for both 2008 and 2009.
The Society for German Language in Wiesbaden has published the list of Germany’s most popular names since 1977. Rankings are based on a nationwide sample of 225 registry offices.
On the 2009 chart for boys, Maximilian was followed Alexander, Leon, Paul, Luca, Elias, Felix, Lukas/Lucas, Jonas and David. This year Jonas bumped Tim off the top ten list.
After Marie, Sophie fell to number two and was trailed by Maria, Anna, Emma, Mia, Sophia/Sofia, Leonie, Lena, and Johanna. Mia is new to the group of top ten.
Regional rankings from West Germany showed some variation from the national charts, though. For girls, Anna was the most popular name in Donauwörth, Lena was most-beloved in Hofgeismar und Langenau, and Leonie led the pack in Siegen. For baby boys, Ben topped the list in Eisenhüttenstadt and Georgsmarienhütte, while Julius was number one in Greven, Mohamed topped the charts in Langen, and Samuel in Illertissen.
Names that appeared only once in the 2009 registry included Fridolin, Leeland, Nealjano, Siddhart, Hermine, Haruka und Sharpay.
