The 39-year-old man from Mainz was convicted of murdering a 20-year-old woman, who agreed to model for S&M photos for him last summer. He was also convicted of desecrating the dead because he had sex with the corpse of the woman after she died.
During the trial prosecutors asked for a 14-year jail sentence due to diminished culpability owing to a serious personality disorder. The man’s defence pled for three years on charges of negligent manslaughter. He will be sent to a psychological care facility because the court found he had murdered the woman to satisfy his sexual urges.
The scientist, a dinosaur expert, admitted during his trial that he strangled the woman, but denied that he killed her intentionally. Instead he claimed the victim had agreed to take part in violent sexual role-playing.
The woman was found dead in a hotel room near Potsdam in July 2008 after the two had taken part in a photo shoot involving several S&M fans.
The scene of her death in the two-room suite revealed spots of blood on the bedding, and wax droplets on the hardwood floors from a black candle that had burned down.
