“With a modern, internet-savvy phone, you can now experience history live,” IGD spokesman Michael Zöllner said in a statement. “Who hasn’t dreamed of wandering through ancient places at the height of their bloom?”
The “Augmented Reality” technology analyses the position and angle of a photo taken on the phone, and finds a comparable photo and information on the internet. The software is compatible with the iPhone as well as an Ultra Mobile PC.
“On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, we decided to use Berlin as our example to present the new AR technology,” said Zöllner, showing historical pictures of Berlin at a CeBIT demonstration.
The Fraunhofer IGD developed the software in cooperation with Tourism Media Production, a company that produces and markets new tourism products, and with the support of the Berlin Senate.
“Soon, tourists with AR will be able to carry their personal tour guide with them,” Zöllner declared.
