MIDDLE EAST CRISIS

Spain’s PM demands Israel explain ‘brutal’ Gaza strike on aid workers

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez demanded Tuesday that Israel "clarify as soon as possible" a strike which killed seven aid workers unloading desperately needed food in Gaza as part of charity work organised by Spanish celebrity chef José Andrés.

“They died while doing what this NGO has been doing for years, which is feeding people in the middle of so much devastation,” Sánchez said on a visit to the Jabal el-Hussein Palestinian refugee camp in neighbouring Jordan.

“I expect and demand that the Israeli government clarify as soon as possible the circumstances of this brutal attack that has taken the lives of seven aid workers who were doing nothing but helping,” he added.

Food aid organisation World Central Kitchen said it was pausing its operations in Gaza after the “targeted Israeli strike” on Monday killed Australian, British, Palestinian, Polish and US-Canadian staff.

Founded by Spanish-American celebrity chef José Andrés, the charity feeds communities affected by conflict. It was set up by Andres and his wife Patricia in 2020 following a devastating earthquake in Haiti.

The Israeli army said Tuesday it would hold an investigation into the air strike and pledged to “share our findings transparently”.

“We will be opening a probe to examine this serious incident further,” armed forces spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a video statement.

“This will help us reduce the risk of such an event from occurring again,” Rear Admiral Hagari added.

Sánchez arrived in Amman late on Monday on the first leg of a Middle East tour that will also take him to Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

WAR IN UKRAINE

Zelensky cancels visit to Spain

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cancelled an expected visit on Friday to Madrid, Spanish media reported, with the news confirmed by the Spanish royal palace's updated agenda.

Zelensky cancels visit to Spain

The palace updated the royal agenda on Wednesday, removing a Friday meeting between Spain’s King Felipe VI and Zelensky.

Spanish press reports said the Ukrainian leader made the decision after Russia launched an offensive on northeastern Ukraine.

The Spanish government has not provided any details on the planned visit but daily newspaper El País said Zelensky and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez were expected to sign a bilateral agreement on security guarantees between their countries.

The Ukrainian leader was last in Spain in October 2023 for the European Political Community meeting held in Granada.

Russia’s surprise ground offensive in the Kharkiv region has forced thousands to evacuate and pushed Kyiv to mobilise troop reinforcements.

The advance is the latest in a string of tactical successes for Russia on the battlefield this year after initial setbacks in a conflict that Moscow hoped would be wrapped up in days.
