Nicolas Rubin, the mayor of Châtel, which is part of the large Swiss-French winter sports area Portes du Soleil, said he was trying to send a message to Paris

Unlike in France, ski fields in Switzerland are open and look likely to remain open in the coming festive period.

“Dissatisfaction manifests itself through colour. All mountain areas rise up against the position taken too early by the government,” the mayor said on Facebook.

“The Châtel town hall symbolically bears the Swiss colours”.
