The west of the country could see hurricane-level weather conditions, news agency NTB reports.

Winds up to hurricane force could blow along the coast from Stad in Vestland to Bodø further north, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) has forecast.

The weather has the potential to cause traffic problems, with snowdrifts possible in the mountains of southern Norway due to strong wind and snow, MET Norway warned.

The worst weather will be for those staying in the mountains in southern Norway or in the northwest, MET meteorologist Steinar Skare told NRK.

“(Gale force) wind gusts can result in cancelled departures on boats, ferries and planes. And bridges and mountain roads can be closed. Very strong winds are expected,” Skare said.

Heavy rainfall is meanwhile forecast in western and inland regions with up to 100 millimetres of rainfall from Tuesday evening.

The storm is set to continue north on Wednesday, where wind gusts of 30 to 37 meters per second are expected in the morning in the county of Møre and Romsdal. Gusts of 30 to 35 meters per second are expected in Trøndelag as well as Helgeland in Nordland county.

The strong wind will also cause high waves at sea, notably from Stad northwards.

Wednesday evening will peak with 14 metre-high waves off Trøndelag, MET Norway tweeted on Tuesday.

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) has issued avalanche warnings for a number of locations.

On Arctic archipelago Svalbard, a “great or significant” risk of avalanche has been advised in Svalbard East, Svalbard South and Nordenskiöld Land.

On the mainland, North Norway and West Norway are both at risk of avalanche in the next few days.

Precise information on location and risk level can be checked on an ongoing basis via the NVE’s website.

Norway to get a taste of summer with 20C days this week

Summer is finally here! Or least it is if you live in southern Norway, where a warm front coming up from Europe will bring t-shirt temperatures of 20C by Thursday, according to forecasts.

Norway to get a taste of summer with 20C days this week

Warm air from southern Europe will combine with a high pressure zone which will bring clear skies and sunshine, with summery weather coming towards the end of the week, Norway’s national weather forecaster Yr has reported.

“Thursday and Friday especially will be nice,” Ingrid Villa, a meteorologist at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, told the public broadcaster NRK. “Then we will probably get temperatures of over 20 degrees Celsius in some places.”

Patches of 20C warmth are expected both in western Norway around Bergen and in Western Norway around Oslo, with the area around Tromsø expected to have slightly cooler weather, although Villa said that “it will absolutely be something like summer there too”.

The warm sunny weather is, however, expected to pass northern Norway by, with grey overcast skies expected for much of this week.

But if you think summer has come to Norway to stay, you risk disappointment as much cooler temperatures are expected next week.

“There’s nothing unusual in getting an early taste of summer in April and the start of May, and then we can quickly go back to cooler more spring-like weather,” Villa said.
