Spanish energy firm lands huge wind turbine contract in Netherlands

Spanish-German renewable energy firm Siemens Gamesa said Thursday it has won a contract to supply and maintain 94 wind turbines for a wind power plant located off the coast of the Netherlands.

The 94 turbines will have the capacity of 752 MW, enough to cover the annual electricity consumption of one million households, the firm, the world's largest maker of wind turbines, said in a statement.

Siemens Gamesa did not provide the value of the contract but a company spokesman said it is “amongst the biggest in Europe”.

The wind turbines will be installed at a wind power plant being set up by Denmark's Dong Energy, one of the world's three leading offshore wind operators, 22 kilometres (13 miles) from the Dutch province of Zeeland.

The nacelles for the project will be assembled at Siemens Gamesa's new factory in Cuxhaven, Germany, while the blades will be produced in Hull in Britain.

The Netherlands, along with Britain, Denmark and Germany, form the hub of the European offshore wind industry.
